The Governor and one-time critic now says he’ll do anything he can to support Trump…
Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who formerly backed fellow Texan Sen. Ted Cruz told CNN Thursday that he endorses Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump.
This was announced on “Out Front” by CNN’s Dana Bash, who added that the former presidential hopeful told her that he’d do what he could to help him into the White House.
“Rick Perry just told me in a phone call from his home state of Texas that he does support Donald Trump and he’s going to do everything he can to help Donald Trump get elected,” Bash said. “He said that he believes in the process, and the process meaning the voters inside the Republican electorate clearly said Donald Trump should be the guy, and he is going to follow that process.”
Perry also dismissed the notion of running as a third-party candidate, a move that his supporters have suggested.
“Anyone who is considering a third-party run does not understand what is going on in this country — does not understand the anger that the country has,” Perry said.
“I don’t think it accomplishes anything,” he added. “I ran to be the president of the United States, and when it became clear the electorate didn’t want me to be president, I stepped away.”
Perry, a former Trump critic, said he’d be open to serving as Trump’s running mate.
“I am going to be open to any way I can help. I am not going to say no,” Perry said. “We can’t afford the policies and the character of Hillary Clinton,” he added. But, Perry said, he has not spoken to Trump in at least six months.
