Sales of firearms are rising nationwide and they are particularly high among one group of people.

An increasing number of guns are being purchased by senior citizens according to the National Rifle Association which noted a 400 percent increase since 2010 in the number of seniors taking a basic firearms course, WFMZ TV reported.

“There were so many home invasions and you hear about so many things that happen when people are walking down the street, so I thought it was time,” said 71-year-old Joan Eshelman of Pennsylvania.

The past three years have seen gun sales more than triple according to Saint Lawrence-based Sensibly Armed, which noted even the style of guns being purchased has changed. Seniors who used to buy classic revolvers or target-style pistols are now buying more self-defense style weapons like a semi-automatic 9mm, according to WFMZ.

“A firearm is the only thing that can put a 95-year-old widow, that hasn’t left the house in 20 years, on the exact same playing field as a 22-year-old boxing heavyweight world champion,” said manager Ryan Perry.

“I’ve seen it on television, I see it in magazines, and you know, if it should happen, I just want to be ready,” 79-year-old Jack Kirse told 41 Action News. Kirse regularly practices at Missouri gun store Frontier Justice, which has begun offering its first ever, seniors-only gun class.

The NRA noted a 300 percent increase in the last five years of the number of students enrolled in gun classes, according to Action News.

Indiana’s Tim’s Shooting Academy has noticed the rise in older customers as well, Fox5 reported.

“I’m seeing more of a demographic change to older customers. And they are very, very interested in learning and being safe,” owner, Tim Tomich. Four out of 11 firearms sold in one day recently were to customers who were 65 or older, Tomich said.
