Perhaps hoping to avoid the firestorm of controversy competitor Target is experiencing over its pro-transgender “inclusivity” policy, Walmart is being tight-lipped about its stance on the issue.

There are at least 30 companies with transgender-friendly company policies, but few are experiencing the backlash that Target is seeing after the nation’s second largest retailer said transgender customers and employees can use whichever bathroom or fitting room they prefer.

In addition to more than 1 million people signing a petition saying they will boycott Target, the company has seen its stock prices plummet.

And Walmart does not appear to be in a rush to enter the fray.

The largest retailer in the United States did not respond to requests from AL.com about its policy toward transgender shoppers and employees, although the company did add transgender employees to its non-discrimination policy in 2011, according to the Huffington Post.

Western Journalism also tried to contact Walmart, but reported that the company’s corporate office was “unresponsive.”

Other companies have not been as shy to comment on their policy toward transgender folks.

“Starbucks, Hudson’s Bay Co. — parent company to Lord & Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue — and Barnes & Noble all told USA TODAY that employees and customers in their stores are welcome to use the bathroom of the gender they identify with,” AL.com reported.
