At a campaign stop in Indiana on Saturday, Heidi Cruz said her husband, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, “is an immigrant.”

Ted is an immigrant. He is Hispanic. ” she said, according to the Washington Examiner. “He can unify this party.”

“We have libertarians joining our cause. I have people every day from the Democrat Party telling me that they re-registered to vote for Ted as a Republican. Because they understand what he stands for, and he represents America,” she continued.

Cruz, whose father is Cuban and mother is American, was born north of the border in Canada.

For months Donald Trump has insisted that meant Cruz was not a natural-born citizen eligible to become president.

He probably didn’t expect validation from Cruz’s wife.
