Hundreds of workers on Sen. Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign will be looking for work today, after Sanders announced Wednesday that his campaign is laying off hundreds.
The announcement comes one day after Sanders lost four out of five primaries in northeastern states, further shrinking his already long-shot odds of overtaking Hillary Clinton in the Democratic race. Sanders said the layoffs reflect the fact that only a handful of states remain on the primary calendar.
“It will be hundreds of staff members,” Sanders told The New York Times. “We have had a very large staff, which was designed to deal with 50 states in this country; 40 of the states are now behind us. So we have had a great staff, great people.”
Going forward, the Sanders campaign will concentrate much of its remaining staff in California, by far the largest state left on the primary calendar.
“Symbolically and in terms of delegates, if we can win the largest state in this country, that will send a real message to the American people and to the delegates that this is a campaign that is moving in the direction it should,” Sanders said.
Despite the layoffs, Sanders says he still plans to keep up his campaign through the Democratic convention in July. If his campaign somehow wins the nomination, Sanders says all of those let go will be rehired.
The Sanders campaign has been able to maintain a large organization thanks to its tremendous ability to raise money through small donations, but it has also spent money at a prodigious rate.
