Rudy Giuliani and Rick Perry weighed in on the 2016 presidential race and the debate over delegates and the Republican candidates.
The controversy over Colorado’s convention results proves points made by both GOP candidates Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, former New York City Mayor Giuliani said on Fox News’ “Hannity” on Tuesday.
“This is an elite dominated political party with a grassroots that wants to go the other way,” he said.
Giuliani noted that the Republican race should be between Trump and Cruz, dismissing the idea of nominating a completely different candidate at the party convention. “Then why should we have primaries, ever?” he asked.
He added that the GOP would not be able to unite its members “if they try to pull a rabbit out of the hat and try to put somebody in who hasn’t been in the race.” Giuliani did not rule out the possibility of a Trump-Cruz ticket in the future of the race.
Former governor of Texas Rick Perry agreed with Giuliani that at this point, the Republican race is between Cruz and Trump. “Anything else is completely out of the realm of possibility,” he said, adding that he believes a contested convention is in the future.
“I don’t think that anybody’s going to get to 1,237. I think we will go to a contested convention and I don’t have a problem with that,” said Perry who has endorsed fellow Texan Ted Cruz.
Perry noted that Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus and the rules committee would be “making a huge mistake” if they try to make changes to Republican convention rules at this point. Although, he was confident that even with a contested convention, things would be worked out.
“At the end of the day,” he added, “people are throwing a lot of elbows. People have said this about New York, people have said this about Texas. We’re Americans. And that’s what’s really important.”
