How great it is to be a white progressive Democrat in America today.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio joked about how long it took him to endorse Hillary Clinton, saying it was because he operates on “CP time,” which is short for “colored people time.”
The definition of “CP time, according to Urban Dictionary: “[A] stereotyping of African Americans/Black People as not punctual/frequently or constantly being late.”
Twitchy.com reported that de Blasio dropped the phrase Friday at the Inner Circle Show, a dinner modeled after the Gridiron Club held each year in New York City where politicians are satirized by local political reporters.
Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton was on the stage with the mayor at the time and even tried to clean up the “joke” by suggesting the phrase stands for “cautious politician time.”
If only a Republican ever dared to go there … the joke happens at the 8:55-minute mark in the video below:
The idea that a Republican politician would never get away with what de Blasio and Clinton were a part of was a common theme on social media.
Here’s a sampling of responses from Twitter:

@MaraGay Damn, @BilldeBlasio digs up some real old-school racism. I haven’t heard that one in at least 30 years.

@MaraGay @BilldeBlasio It’s ok to be racist if you’re a democrat.

.@BecketAdams Colored People time. It’s a very commonly used phrase. Check out Kanye’s “Primetime.”
— Karol Markowicz (@karol) April 10, 2016
@karol Is it common enough that a white mayor in NYC can drop it casually and people are like, “yeah whatever”?
— T. Becket Adams (@BecketAdams) April 10, 2016
@karol @BecketAdams ? typically pretty racist when a white guy says it.
— Dick Dago (@DickDago) April 10, 2016
If a white Republican even thought of making a joke on ‘CP time’, Salon and Fusion wouldn’t be able to get out a racism piece quick enough.

@brittaufait @justkarl Are we sure he didn’t mean “Communist Party” time?
