A complaint filed with the Justice Department by a pro-Clinton watchdog group alleges that Donald Trump illegally promised an administration position to Ben Carson in exchange for the former candidate’s endorsement.

The political accountability group, American Democracy Legal Fund, filed the complaint in a letter addressed to the head of the Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section, Raymond Hulser on March 29, according to a Politico report.

“It has recently come to light that Mr. Donald Trump may have willfully offered Dr. Ben Carson an appointment to his administration should he become president in return for supporting his candidacy in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 599,” the letter stated.”ADLF respectfully requests that you investigate this matter and take all appropriate action as soon as possible.”

The complaint refers to Carson’s comments to Newsmax TV and reports by CNN and the Washington Post on the former Republican candidate’s endorsement of Trump on March 11, reported Politico.

“Dr. Carson’s comments strongly suggest that Mr. Trump promised him an administration position in return for his endorsement,” the letter, written by head of ADLF, Brad Woodhouse, stated. Candidates are barred by federal law from making promises for future government positions in exchange for campaign support, and could face up to two years in prison for violations.

“Dr. Carson’s comments indicate that Mr. Trump used the promise of a role in his administration to secure Dr. Carson’s support for his presidential campaign,” the complaint concluded. “For the above stated reasons, we respectfully request that you undertake an immediate investigation of this matter.”

The ADLF was launched by operative David Brock, the conservative-turned-liberal CEO and founder of progressive media watchdog group, “Media Matters for America.” The current complaint is the second one the ADLF has filed against the GOP front-runner in addition to three complaints filed against Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders last week.
