Hatchet-wielding masked man shot dead by 7-Eleven customer

A Washington state convenience store customer with a concealed handgun permit brought an attack by a hatchet-wielding masked man Sunday to an abrupt end, leaving the attacker dead in the process.

Without saying a word, the masked man entered a White Center, Washington, 7-Eleven and started swinging a hatchet at the clerk and customers, according to Seattle’s KCPO Fox 13 News.

He then set his sights on the store clerk, causing minor injury to his abdomen. Before he could inflict greater damage, a customer drew his weapon and fired at the suspect.

Shortly after the incident, medics pronounced the attacker dead.

Kings County Sheriff’s investigators expressed relief that the shooter was there and are not charging him.

“Fortunately, because of this customer with his weapon, this could have been a lot worse,” King County Sheriff’s Sergeant Cindi West told the station.

“The clerk could be the one laying there dead on the floor right now.”

The shooter, a 60-year-old Seattle man, is a regular at the store, the clerk said.

“The customer’s a nice guy,” another store employee told KCPO-TV. “He’s been coming here for about 12 years. He buys scratch tickets, in the morning time. He buys coffee. He’s a good guy.”
