It’s been widely reported that retired pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson will endorse Donald Trump for the presidency Friday morning. Now that Trump himself has made that declaration, the pressure’s really on for Carson to come through.
Trump made the announcement Thursday night at the CNN Republican presidential debate in Miami, Florida. When he was asked a question about his opposition to the Common Core education initiative, Trump seized the opportunity to name-drop.
The formal endorsement will be made at a news conference at Trump’s Mar-A-Lago Palm Beach resort, according to The Hill.
Trump also indicated Carson will take an active role in the campaign.
“I’m going to have Ben very involved with education, something that really is an expertise of his,” the real estate developer said.
The Hill reported:
Their campaigns colluded at one point to seize the debate negotiating process from the Republican National Committee, and Trump went strongly after Ted Cruz’s campaign for spreading the false rumor that Carson was dropping out of the race before the Iowa caucuses.
Carson rarely, if ever, criticized Trump while they were competing, and at debates, Trump repeatedly lauded Carson as a good and decent man.
Over the summer, Carson became the first Republican to challenge Trump atop the polls, putting an exclamation point on a cycle dominated by political outsiders and insurgent candidates.
Their relationship hadn’t always been so friendly, however.
Thursday’s announcement came six months to the day after Trump referred to Carson, the first surgeon to successfully separate twins conjoined at the head, as “perhaps an OK doctor.”

@CNN lots of substance in that: “he wants a lot of things that are really terrific, competitive schools” ….
