‘I’m embarrassed for my people’; shocking behavior from teens in courtroom prompts stern reprimands

“As a black man, I’m embarrassed for my people.”

That was the reaction when three teens turned a Broward County, Florida courtroom into a circus Tuesday when they were arraigned after a police chase involving stolen automobiles.

Three 15-year-old male suspects were facing a variety of charges including burglary, grand theft auto and fleeing and eluding police, stemming from a joyriding incident the night before that led police on a chase throughout the county.

When the judge ordered suspected driver Maurice Thomas to spend the following 21 days in detention, Thomas became upset, prompting friends and family members to act out in various ways, according to WSVN Channel 7 News, which reported:

The ruling did not go over well with his friends and family. 7 News cameras captured a young woman dancing while another lashed out at a guard with obscenities. Meanwhile, suspect Dontavious Butler flashed two rows of gold teeth for the camera.

In short, they either lashed out at the court or thought the proceedings were a joke. When the judge was unable to quell the disturbance, he ordered the disrupters arrested and the courtroom cleared.

After 7 News posted the video to its Facebook page under the headline, “Disorder in the Court,” reaction was swift.

“Wow, as a black man I’m embarrassed for my people,” one wrote, adding that both the teens and their parents are totally lacking in respect.

“If I had done something like that as a young man I would not be writing this, my grandmother would have KILLED me DEAD,” he continues. “Words can’t express the hurt I have for these young people, they will not live a long life if they continue to live this way.”

Another wrote, “Smh[Shaking my head] … And we wonder why our children are dying … No respect at all and when the police kill them the parents are like my son was a good young man! Yea sure he was.”
