Former Gov. Mitt Romney will give a speech Thursday morning on the state of the 2016 presidential race, in what some are speculating could be part of a last-ditch establishment plan to defeat Donald Trump.
Romney will address “the state of the 2016 presidential race,” he announced in a media advisory Wednesday, following big wins for Trump in Tuesday’s primary races. He’s scheduled to give a speech at the University of Utah at 11:30 a.m. EST.
“On Thursday, March 3rd, former governor of Massachusetts Mitt Romney will address the Hinckley Institute of Politics at the University of Utah on the state of the 2016 race,” the advisory reads.

The failed Republican presidential candidate may simply weigh in on the race, but some are speculating he’ll endorse one of the remaining candidates or make a case for the party to unify around an anti-Trump option. Or maybe he’ll throw his hat back into the presidential ring.
After he opted early last year not to run again, he told Yahoo’s Katie Couric it just didn’t feel “right” at the time. “Somehow, it just didn’t feel like this was the right time for us to step forward,” he said at the time. “I would love to be president. I just concluded I was not the best person to carry forward the Republican torch.”
Republican leaders are scrambling after Trump piled up victories Tuesday in seven states, including Alabama and Massachusetts, and seems poised to nab the nomination. His closest rivals, Republican senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, each have reasonable arguments for staying in the race, making it harder for the party to rally around an anti-Trump candidate.
