Ben Carson accused of racism after dropping bomb about Obama’s color

Republican presidential contender Dr. Ben Carson is getting some flak for remarking Tuesday morning that although President Obama is black, he was “raised white.”

He made his observation during an interview with radio host Glenn Thrush for Politico.

Carson said he felt an understandable sense of pride when Obama became the first African American to ascend to the White House, but distinguished the president’s early years from his own.

“I mean, like most Americans, I was proud that we broke the color barrier when he was elected, but I also recognize that his experience and my experience are night and day,” he said at about the 16:30 mark. “He didn’t grow up like I grew up by any stretch of the imagination. Not even close.”

Then the retired neurosurgeon explained what he meant.

“He’s an ‘African’ American. He was, you know, raised white. Many of his formative years were spent in Indonesia. So for him to, you know, claim that, you know, he identifies with the experience of black Americans I think is a bit of a stretch.”

Following the interview, Politico tweeted:

A lot of the replies were viscous.

But there were also those who understood what Carson was saying.
