Police video: Buried alive victim dug himself out of grave with slit throat to try to save his son

Dashcam footage of a victim of a brutal crime who dug himself out of a grave has surfaced in advance of a TV special about the crime.

It was Feb. 18, 2002 when two robbers broke into the home of Forrest “Butch” Bowyer, slashed his throat, shot his 12-year-old son Brett in the head and buried them next to each other in a makeshift grave, WVTM reported.

Bowyer crawled out of the grave and walked “a quarter mile, bleeding the whole way,” Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor told WVTM.

The responding officer heard in the dashcam footage was horrified by what he discovered.

“I got a man that’s been cut to hell and said his son’s been shot 3 times, is buried in a grave down here at Uchee, and he wants to go get him. He (Butch) was buried and dug himself out, this is a bad one,” the officer said as he radioed the call in.

In the video Bowyer repeatedly identified “Jim Brooks” as the perpetrator of the crime.

Brooks was arrested shortly after the crime and named Michael Carruth as his accomplice.

Both men currently sit on death row.
