To complain of a media double standard in American politics is to acknowledge a lack of understanding of how the process is expected to play out.
A process Dana Perino, the former White House press secretary for President George W. Bush, knows better than most, which is why a question she raised Sunday about Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton‘s interaction with the press was so stinging.
Politico reporter Burgess Everett noted on social media that Fox News’ Chris Wallace said Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in the ONLY candidate not to appear on the network:
Chris Wallace casually says Fox has had every presidential candidate on except Hillary Clinton

And while it would be unheard of for a Republican presidential candidate to go 79 days without taking a question from the press assigned to cover the candidate — the media itself would ensure as much — that is the running tab for Clinton, as CNN producer Dan Merica and GOP strategist Rory Cooper each pointed out:
It’s also been 79 days since she’s taken a question from traveling press. https://t.co/I2bveipkaR

For this counting (@amychozick): It has been 76 days since Hillary Clinton held a press conference or gaggled with her traveling press.

And that’s where Perino stepped in with this zinger:
Why even have a traveling press corps then? https://t.co/gmpNAGQxr8

The reaction on social media included asking why the media bothers to cover Clinton’s campaign if she refuses to take questions, but they dutifully tag along anyway without so much of a fuss.

@DanaPerino What else is she going to do with all the ropes?

@DanaPerino For when she barks like a dog?

@DanaPerino The only questions she should be answering should be in a courtroom.
