White House: Obama won’t go to Justice Scalia’s funeral

The White House announced Wednesday that the president would not be attending the funeral of Justice Antonin Scalia but will instead accompany his wife, Michelle Obama, to “pay their respects” at the Supreme Court on Friday, spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters.

Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill will attend the funeral in place of the president, POLITICO reported.

The most recent member of the Supreme Court to die was Chief Justice William Rehnquist in 2005. In that instance, President George W. Bush not only attended the funeral, he also eulogized Rehnquist.
