Crisis builds: Even Germany’s Catholic church calls for reduction in refugees

Buckling under the strain of taking in over one million asylum-seekers in 2015, Germany is trying to cope with the influx as the Catholic Church has called for a reduction in the refugee number.

The German Catholic Church said the country just could not “take in all the world’s needy,” according to a report by Yahoo News.

In an interview published Saturday, chairman of the German Bishops’ Conference Cardinal Reinhard Marx told the Passauer Neue Presse, “As a church we say that we need a reduction in the number of refugees.” The response to the migrant crisis, Marx added, should be one of not just “charity but also reason,” reported Yahoo.

As Germany faces a refugee crisis on a level unseen in Europe since World War II, there has been a steady rise in the racial intolerance as well.

Chairwoman Frauke Petry, of Germany’s right-wing populist AfD party, said border police “should be able if need be to have recourse to their firearms — as laid down by law,” shooting migrants trying to enter the country as necessary.

“Sadly there has always been a certain potential for right-wing extremism and racism in Germany,” Marx responded, adding that this type of speech is “unacceptable.”
