The Chicago Theological Seminary is seeking to enlighten students about the injustice of “systemic racism” with the use of “white privilege glasses.”
During a short “educational” video, a skeptical white man is asked to don a pair of glasses that will make him see the world through the eyes of a black man or woman.
Instantly, every white person the man encounters turns into a jerk the minute he puts on the glasses. The friendly mom strolling by is suddenly appalled, the relaxed shopkeeper becomes instantly suspicious, and officer friendly turns into officer scary as soon as the glasses reveal “the truth.” Heck, the video even takes a shot at America’s Founding Fathers.
To say that the video paints white people with a broad-brush is putting it mildly. That’s not to say that real racism doesn’t exist, and it most definitely shouldn’t be tolerated. But, to speculate and then try to illustrate how all white people see all black people could be considered racist in and of itself.
The CTS explains its reasoning on its website. (It will come as no surprise to most that the group is in hot pursuit of social justice.)
The mission of CTS is to work towards greater social justice. And nowhere is this more needed than in the area of race.
To this end, CTS has created a web video to shine the light on White Privilege. We believe the racial divide will only change when the collective “we” understand the concepts of privilege and begin to identify and correct the systems that advantage one group over the other.
We intend for this White Privilege Glasses video to spark discussions and inspire dialogue about this very serious issue. We want to start people thinking, talking … acting.
Maybe we can start acting like individuals instead of dividing people into groups in order to push an agenda. A jerk’s a jerk, and there are plenty of them out there. No need to create more through “white privilege glasses.”
