In the age of political correctness, historical context means nothing, and Hollywood did its best to rewrite history for the newest installment of “Grease.”
On Sunday, Fox aired “Grease: Live” and it took great pains to make the cast diverse.
Just one problem — it’s completely inaccurate both with the original “Grease” and 1959 America.
Black actress Keke Palmer played Marty Maraschino, Wendell Pierce was cast as Coach Calhoun, Jordan Fisher took on the role of Doody and numerous background dancers were either black, Asian or Hispanic.
This would be fine for a 2016 movie, but this film was a period piece, and this type of ethnic diversity in school was uncommon, if not nonexistent, in the 1950s.
And the progressive makeover didn’t stop there.
The new version of Grease featured male cheerleaders, had the Sandy character get her ears pierced rather than smoke a cigarette, changed the lyrics to some of the songs and added interracial relationships.
Palmer posted to Instagram hours before the show praising the diversity of the new cast.
Still, many on social media thought the whitewashing of history and progressiveness of the new version of the classic was ridiculous.

Can’t believe #GreaseLive didn’t make Danny and Sandy black and Eugene a homo. Sooooooo Un-PC.

Grease is what it is. Does it also have to be about life lessons & PC messaging? Cause the songs say something else. #greaselive

This PC in #GreaseLive is ridiculous but nothing will ever top that bizarre Cinderella movie staring Brandy. pic.twitter.com/xKyO6FwpCY

There were lots of urban public schools in 1959 at which interracial dating was no big deal, right? Ooodles? #GreaseLive

Lot of interracial couples for a musical based on 1950s greaser gangs.
Diversity over reality I always say. ☺️#GreaseLive

who knew Rydell High was such a bastion of interracial dating? And in 1959 too. Huh. You learn something every day. #GreaseLive
