French minister resigns in protest of new anti-terror laws

DC-NEWS 300X71By JP Carroll

French Justice Minister Christiane Taubira resigned from the French government Thursday over her disagreement with a proposed law to strip dual citizen terrorists of their French citizenship.

The resignation comes after a year of tension between Taubira and President François Hollande because of policy differences over the January 2015 Charlie Hebdo shooting and November Paris attacks, according to France 24.

The proposal to strip dual citizens of French citizenship came about after the November Paris attacks that left 130 people dead. Debate on the proposed law will begin in early February, according to BBC News.

France is currently in a state of emergency, which allows the government to implement greater security measures on a temporary basis. If the anti-terror proposal becomes law, the French constitution will be changed, consequently making many of the temporary powers granted to France’s security apparatus permanent, according to The Guardian.

Taubira hails from the French territory French Guiana and is a longtime member of the ruling Socialist Party. In spite of Taubira’s resignation, it is expected that Hollande’s proposed constitutional reforms will be approved by the country’s parliament.
