Ryan: We will hold a vote to override president’s Obamacare repeal veto [VIDEO]

House Speaker Paul Ryan said Friday the House will hold a vote later this month to override President Barack Obama’s veto of the Restoring Americans’ Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act. The bill is designed to unravel major components of Obamacare and defund Planned Parenthood for a year.

Obama announced his veto in a statement Friday morning and said the legislation “would reverse the significant progress we have made in improving health care in America.”

The bill was sent to the president’s desk Tuesday, and would eliminate the individual and employer mandates, kills the Cadillac tax and medical device tax — which were recently delayed for two years under a provision in the omnibus spending bill — and defund Planned Parenthood for a year.

Ryan said passing the measure provides a clear path to repealing the president’s landmark health care law — which has raised premiums for most Americans, increased costs for small businesses and caused many American to lose access their doctors — when a Republican is elected to the White House.

“It’s no surprise that someone named Obama vetoed a bill repealing Obamacare,” he said in a statement. “But we will hold a vote to override this veto, taking this process all the way to the end under the Constitution.”

To get the bill through both chambers, GOP lawmakers used reconciliation — a filibuster-proof, fast-track tool that allows for an unlimited number of amendments and only requires a majority vote.

“The idea that Obamacare is the law of the land for good is a myth. This law will collapse under its own weight, or it will be repealed. Because all those rules and procedures Senate Democrats have used to block us from doing this? That’s all history,” Ryan continued, adding it will only be a matter of time before Obamacare is repealed. “We have now shown that there is a clear path to repealing Obamacare without 60 votes in the Senate.”

Ryan promised a plan to repeal and replace Obamacare before the end of the year during his first major address to Congress in December
