President Barack Obama shared his New Year’s resolution Friday in his weekly radio address, saying he will “move forward” on addressing the “epidemic of gun violence.”
A feat he will accomplish by circumventing Congress yet again — the president is expected to announce a new executive action any day now that will expand background checks on gun sales.
“My New Year’s resolution is to move forward on our unfinished business as much as I can and I’ll be more frequently asking for your help,” Obama said. “That’s especially true for one piece of unfinished business: our epidemic of gun violence.”
Obama also said he’ll meet Monday with Attorney General Loretta Lynch to discuss options for imposing tougher gun restrictions.
Following a familiar script to justify taking unilateral action, the president said he receives letters from parents, teachers and children asking him about gun violence and insisted he can’t “sit around and do nothing.”
Not only is Obama prepared to take on the NRA in the process, he’s asking the American people to help him do so.
For the kids, of course.
“Change, as always, is going to take all of us,” the president said Friday. “The gun lobby is loud and well organized in its defense of effortlessly available guns for anyone. The rest of us are going to have to be just as passionate and well organized in our defense of our kids.”
“That’s the work of citizenship — to stand up and fight for the change that we seek,” he added
The NRA said recently that Obama’s gun control agenda “will only make it harder for law-abiding citizens to exercise their right to self-defense,” according to CNN.
As for getting the help of the folks, the reaction on social media suggests otherwise. Here’s a sampling of responses from Twitter:
