Racism? Why is Bill Cosby finished, but Bill Clinton beloved?

Conservative writer and commentator Mark Steyn wondered why Bill Cosby’s career is “finished” while former President Bill Clinton gets a free pass and is even “the most beloved guy in America” when each has been accused of the same act — sexually preying on women.

Steyn made his comparison between the two while filling in for talk radio host Rush Limbaugh Tuesday.

“I mean that as a seriously question incidentally,” Steyn said on the program. “Why is Bill Cosby finished? He was the most beloved guy. We keep hearing Bill Clinton is the most beloved guy in America. ‘If Bill Clinton was on the ticket, he’d sweep all 50 states. It would be a landslide. Americans love Bill Clinton.’“

Steyn made his remarks just one day before an arrest warrant was issued for Cosby.

“They loved Bill Cosby – nice grandfatherly Bill Cosby. But somehow, for some reason – you don’t see ‘The Bill Cosby Show’ on TV anymore. You don’t see it on the rerun channels. He is not appearing anywhere,” he said.

“You’d almost think it’s some kind of like racism thing,” he continued. “That somehow, when a bunch of women make accusations against the black guy – boom, he’s vaporized. When a bunch of women make accusations against some white southern redneck — where talking about putting him back in the White House for another eight years as first gentleman.”

The following day, Steyn observed on his own website that he “spent less time on” the subject matter than the subject deserved. Noting that Clinton has many apologists, including the International Business Times’ Abigail Abrams, Steyn wrote:

I don’t think dropping your pants and instructing a state employee to “kiss it”, or groping the breasts of a grieving widow, or telling a woman after you’ve raped her twice that “you might want to put some ice on that” meets the minimum definition of an “affair”. But evidently “the 42nd president’s charm” still works on Abigail Abrams.

The retreat to euphemism is most telling. The President and Mrs Clinton’s marriage is an arrangement, the protection of which necessitated Hillary’s enthusiastic participation in the trashing of his victims. No doubt she’d do the same if the Epstein story were ever to receive the coverage in the US papers that it’s received in Britain. Which is why there are no half-measures for Donald Trump here: he has to go “the full Lewinsky” (as Laura Rosen Cohen advises) or not at all. They’re going to need a lot more euphemisms.

Meanwhile one has his mug shot taken from his Wednesday booking splattered all over the tabloids (which he should), while the other is still mobbed by autograph seekers.
