‘The Daily Show’ tries to debunk ‘good guy with a gun’ theory, embarrasses itself

Intent on debunking the conservative theory that “the only thing that will stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,” comedian Jordan Klepper tried his hand at stopping an active shooter in a firearm training drill.

And “The Daily Show” correspondent failed miserably — as if there was an alternative.

The bit starts out by mocking the process to obtain a concealed-carry license, which includes a NRA-approved gun safety course, with Klepper going from a “gun idiot to idiot with a gun” upon obtaining a license.

It’s a two-part video, with the real action occurring in the second video:

In various training scenarios, Klepper is ‘killed’ repeatedly — the weapons of choice were paintball guns — and even “killed” an unarmed teen he had mistaken for a bad guy.

The whole purpose of Klepper’s “report” seems to be to point out that an FBI report showed only about 3 percent of active shooter incidents were stopped by a civilian and most of those civilians were unarmed.

Klepper doesn’t share that in these incidents, the overwhelming majority of citizens are NOT armed.

Nor does he share that in 5 incidents where “armed individuals who were not law enforcement personnel exchanged gunfire with the shooters … 3 shooters were killed, 1 was wounded, and 1 committed suicide.”

That’s 5 for 5.

But Klepper reached the intended conclusion that the only people who can stop bad guys are the people who have dedicated their lives to protecting others … which would be the people Black Lives Matter has spent months attacking on a daily basis.

The unspoken message is that there’s no need for Americans to carry weapons because they’re not able to use them in a moment of crisis.

Keep in mind the training Klepper underwent involved the most complex, highly stressed scenario any concealed carrier will ever encounter — entering a large facility where an active shooter is hiding.

“All we have to do is figure out who the good guys are, get millions of them to volunteer for 300 hours of training a year, costing billions of dollars, and make sure they’re in the right place at the right time, guns at the ready, and place this civilian army in our 4,700 colleges, 5,700 hospitals, 48,000 malls, hundreds of thousands of churches,” he summarized.

“You know, America.”
