The fight is on between front-runner Donald Trump and fellow Republican presidential nomination contender Sen. Ted Cruz.
The New York Times on Friday uncovered an audio recording of a donor event Cruz held on Wednesday where Cruz said he believed Trump and Dr. Ben Carson’s campaigns would fold eventually to the senator’s benefit.
“My approach, much to the frustration of media, is to bear hug both of them and smother them with love,” Cruz told donors at the event. “I believe that gravity will bring both of those candidates down. I think the lion share of their supporters will come to us.”
Cruz said he respects and likes both men but he said with fears of terrorism on the rise voters are looking for a serious choice.
“You look at Paris, you look at San Bernardino, it’s given a seriousness to this race,” the senator said. “People are looking for who is prepared to be a commander in chief. Who understands the threats we face. ‘Who am I comfortable having their finger on the button?’ Now that’s a question of strength, but it’s also a question of judgment. And I think that is a question that is a challenging question for both of them.”
In typical Trump fashion the front-runner wasted no time in firing back. First on social media, then at a campaign stop of his own.
Looks like @tedcruz is getting ready to attack. I am leading by so much he must. I hope so, he will fall like all others. Will be easy!

.@tedcruz should not make statements behind closed doors to his bosses, he should bring them out into the open – more fun that way!

At a campaign stop in Iowa Friday Trump needled Cruz for agreeing with him so often.
“Everything I say, he agrees with me. No matter what I say. I was gonna do one really wild, but he agrees,” Trump said before calling himself an Evangelical Christian.
“I do like Ted Cruz, but not a lot of evangelicals come out of Cuba, in all fairness. Not a lot come out. But I like him nevertheless,” he added.
Trump also said Cruz is behind the times on ethanol because big oil pays him.
“I understand that oil pays him a lot of money, he’s gotta be for oil, right?” he asked rhetorically. “The oil companies give him a lot of money.”
Cruz, on the other hand, took the high road on Twitter.
The Establishment’s only hope: Trump & me in a cage match. Sorry to disappoint — @realDonaldTrump is terrific. #DealWithIt

Either way the long awaited “cage match” may be coming.
