Imam agrees with Trump; halting Muslim immigration a ‘very wise move’

A Texas-based Muslim imam said he agrees with Republican presidential contender Donald Trump’s proposed temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States.

His only problem with it is that it doesn’t go far enough — it should include Syrian refugees of all religions.

“I certainly see it to be wise (to) stop temporarily accepting any new Muslim immigrants (refugees and non-refugees) into the United States,” Imam Nidal Alsayyed, religious director of the Islamic Society of Triplex in Beaumont, told local TV station 12 News Now.

He added that Trump’s proposal isn’t unconstitutional in his opinion, that peace and safety should be the biggest concern.

He reiterated his view to Fox News host Sean Hannity Wednesday.

Alsayyed said Trump’s suggestion is a “very wise move” until “Muslims really understand what it takes to live in a Western country.”

He said the problems arise with western versus Middle Eastern interpretations of Sharia law. “The issue is a matter of different backgrounds, from different places,” Alsayyed said.

Ani Zonneveld, the president and founder of Muslims for Progressive Values, agreed, and said that Sharia law is man-made.

“The law of the land is our Sharia,” she said. She added, however, that “Trump is a scumbag for riding on the misery of these refugees who are terrorized by Assad and ISIL.” The radicalism is already in the U.S., Zonneveld pointed out.
