Newlywed Kevin Ortiz, 24, managed two important phone calls to his wife and father after being shot three times during the horrific massacre in San Bernardino Wednesday.
“Kevin said he had been shot three times and that he was in pain but he was all right,” his wife of two weeks, Dyana Ortiz, 23, told the LA Times.
“Then he said ‘I love you’ and I said ‘I love you.’”
Kevin’s father, Carlos, described the conversation with his son who had the wherewithal to call from the Inland Regional Center despite incredible pain and anguish.
“Kevin called me immediately after he got shot and said, ‘I’ve been shot three times, Dad. I’m in pain. Don’t worry. There’s a policeman with me.’”
Having the police officer with him, no doubt, was of great reassurance for both Kevin and his loved ones. Latest reports indicate Kevin was taken to the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for surgery and hasn’t been allowed to receive visitors, according to the Press Enterprise.
His injuries included two shots to the legs and one to the shoulder.
Dyana is anxious, and his father, proud.
“That’s Kevin, he’s a fighter,” his brother David Ortiz said. “Through him, the Ortizes get to shine again.”
