Gun shop billboard makes bold statement; owner defends message as opinion, not hate

A North Carolina gun shop is causing a hubbub by reminding local residents of the Obama administration’s plan to allow Syrian refugees to immigrate to the United States in order to sell firearms.

Cherokee Guns in Murphy, the county seat of Cherokee County, erected a billboard that reads, “Give me your tired, your poor. Keep your Syrian refugees.”

The shop’s owner, who’s known as “Doc,” said he bears no personal animosity toward the refugees; his problem is one of vetting, which he believes is impossible.

“I didn’t put the billboard up on any kind of hate type bias. It was just something that was my opinion,” Doc told local ABC affiliate WLOS News 13. “what’s going on in the world today. We really need to take care of our own before we take care of all these refugees.”

Doc has plenty of people in agreement to his way of thinking — especially after the November 13 attacks in Paris, France by Islamic terrorists.

“They should keep them. Don’t send them here. We can’t afford them,” Murphy resident James Falvo told the station.

“If it were up to me they wouldn’t be over here,” Waylon Carswell pitched in.

“Orphaned children I would agree on if it was necessary. But as adults, men, women, they can pretty much stay over there,” Raven Ewing said to News 13.

Doc told the station that there’s just too much that we don’t know about the refugees.

“How do we vet these people?  We can’t. We can’t. We’re at war with the Syrian government,” Doc said.

And he wonders why we’re expending money and effort on refugees when we have our own problems to deal with..

“We’ve got vets, homeless, needy people…and it’s the holidays,” he said. “Instead of bringing them here, NATO needs to get involved and set up camps, safe camps.”

Still, there were some who didn’t agree with Doc,

“I say you have to do your real homework and if they’re not Jihadists, then you have to kind of open your heart,” Eddie Walker Jr. said.
