While it’s not clear if he’d make them an offer they couldn’t refuse, the son of infamous mob boss John Gambino says the Mafia would do a better job than law enforcement when it comes to protecting New Yorkers from the “psychopathic” Islamic State.
Giovanni Gambino, the son of notorious mob figure John Gambino, told NBC News the fight against Islamic terrorism offers La Cosa Nostra an opportunity to shine, according to Reuters.
“The Mafia has a bad reputation, but much of that’s undeserved,” Gambino said. “As with everything in life, there are good, bad and ugly parts – the rise of global terrorism gives the Mafia a chance to show its good side.”
With its interaction with locals in the 5 boroughs and knowledge of the movements of folks, he said the crime syndicate is well positioned to take care of its friends.
“The world is dangerous today, but people living in New York neighborhoods with Sicilian connections should feel safe,” Gambino said. “We make sure our friends and families are protected from extremists and terrorists, especially the brutal, psychopathic organization that calls itself the Islamic State.”
He pointed to there being no terrorist attacks in Sicily as proof, saying fear of Mafia retaliation prevents ISIS from establishing a footprint on the island, Reuters reported. And he said New York benefits from a similar kind of grassroots protection.
Either way, Gambino has little faith in the FBI or Homeland Security.
“They often act too late, or fail to see a complete picture of what’s happening due to a lack of ‘human intelligence,’” he said.
And the great thing about mob protection is all they ask for in return is to be allowed to wet their beak.
