A gathering of gun carrying protesters made their feelings on accepting Syrian refugees known loud and clear.
The group of about 15 people that called itself the Bureau on American Islamic Relations congregated outside of the Islamic Center of Irving with signs and chanting slogans, the Dallas Morning News reported.
‘We are here protesting Syrian refugees coming to America, protesting the Islamization of America,’ group spokesman David Wright told the Dallas Morning News.
“I think the popular belief is people are scared. They’re scared to say anything about it,” Wright said. “They’re scared to come out to a place like this and stand in front of a mosque and protest Islam.”
City Council member David Palmer came to the see the protest after a member of the mosque called to inform him what was happening.
Palmer was not happy with what he saw, the News reported.
“My initial impression was they were using them for intimidation,” he said. “I doubt that they’d be happy if some of the Muslim churchgoers here showed up at their Christian church, their Baptist church, their Methodist church tomorrow morning with rifles slung over their shoulders.”
Wright didn’t see it that way.
“They’re mostly for self-defense or protection,” he told the News of the weapons. “But I’m not going to lie. We do want to show force. … It would be ridiculous to protest Islam without defending ourselves.”
