The dreams of an undefeated team of Pop Warner football players was trampled by adults who decided being politically correct was better than being fair.
The seven, eight and nine-year-old West Philadelphia Tarheels Mitey-Mites ran over their competition to an 11-0 record and just won their first playoff game when they discovered the rules had changed for last year’s prize for the top two teams in the league, a trip to Disney World, Fox News reported.
Team mom Caiya Whitehead said parents, coaches and kids alike were “devastated” to learn the league would be picking two teams at random for the prize.
“This was not a fair way to handle it,” she said. “They should have contacted us before we paid out money for the regionals. We were not told that this was going to turn into an invitation-only thing. We were amongst the teams in the bracket for making it to Florida.”
A Pop Warned representative disagreed.
“The Mitey-Mites is a training division that is not competitive,” Jay Pruce told Fox News on Friday. “There’s no winners or losers in our Super Bowl.”
Pruce’s explanation made it clear that the ridiculous, liberal, everybody gets a trophy mentality was the driving force behind the decision.
“It became very competitive and we didn’t want that,” he told Fox News. “Years prior it’s just been picked randomly and this year they decided to go down that same road.”
Football got competitive? Who would’ve guessed that?
“We’re real sorry these kids are so disappointed,” Pruce added. “There was a lot of miscommunication from adults.”
“The kids actually cried because that’s what we’ve been coaching them for,” Bryan Tucker, president of the West Philly Tarheels Youth Football and Cheerleading Association, told the Philadelphia Daily News.
A source who wished to remain anonymous told the News that the worst part was changing the rules after the kids were told they were playing for the prize at the start of the season.
“You told 17 9-year-olds that they could achieve this when they couldn’t,” he told the News. “You’re taking inner-city kids and saying it doesn’t matter what accomplishments you make, you can’t come down here this year.
“And the only thing they could say was ‘Sorry’?” he added.. “That’s fine for me, but those kids, man, those kids.”
