After drawing the ire of many on the left for offering stinging commentary about France closing its borders after Friday’s Islamic terrorist attack, actor Rob Lowe felt compelled to defend the opinion that caused all the trouble.
The outspoken conservative had few allies early on, aside from fellow actor Scott Baio, who starred in “Happy Days” and “Charles In Charge” — which only served to add fuel to the liberal fire.
The vitriol was intense, even though Lowe posted several comments in support of France:
Vive La France! #Paris
— Rob Lowe (@RobLowe) November 13, 2015
Lived in France, and spend a ton of time there. Been in that stadium. This is all so devastatingly sad for a place I love. #FrenchPrayers

Wow. For you trolls out there, the phrase “Vive La France” is the traditional expression of SUPPORT for France. Don’t misinterpret my words.
— Rob Lowe (@RobLowe) November 14, 2015
But his effort bore little fruit, other than to bring about another round of criticism, much of which is downright baffling. His tweet calling out trolls is followed up by fans who wonder what is wrong with saying “Vive La France?”

It seems Lowe can’t win in the face of the grief over the Paris attack, but actress Holly Robinson Peete, probably best known for her role on the Fox TV police drama “21 Jump Street,” responded in a show of solidarity.
Here’s her remark, along with a few others who appreciate Lowe’s support:
@RobLowe who don’t know that..?. smh

@RobLowe Merci Rob for your support. I’m french and you should all know that “Vive la France” express Rob’s support to our tragedy.

@RobLowe Vive La France is a statement of freedom and liberty. Shame on you all for your negative remarks. Long live France. — danielle malaure (@daniellemalaure) November 14, 2015
@RobLowe A traditional shout of support is bad?! What are people thinking if at all? — Franco-phil (@Francophil16) November 15, 2015
@RobLowe Wow. I see I’m not the only one who gets punished for saying something positive. Men our age speak too clearly for social media! — Mike Dognose (@dognosemedia) November 14, 2015
@RobLowe I don’t get it. How is this a bad comment? It’s super supportive. #usegoogletranslatebeforecallingrobanAhole

Believe it or not, despite early signs indicating at least two of the jihadists involved in the Paris attack may have been Syrian refugees who traveled to Europe, liberals continue to slam Lowe for implying that the attackers may be … refugees.
.@RobLowe and what does the phrase, “NOW France closes its borders” mean in privileged-white-male-in-first-world language? — Madah J (@Madah_J) November 14, 2015
@RobLowe Oh boy don’t be stupid. People don’t hate on you about Vive la France but about your comment on Hollande and borders. — #Black&Proud (@chocopops_lover) November 14, 2015
@chloedutch @RobLowe Oh, he knows… it’s called ‘spin’. — Da_Skeptunes (@Robin_Volpi) November 14, 2015
One outspoken conservative editor offered a different kind of shout out to the famous actor.
.@RobLowe‘s and @thefredsavage’s new show “The Grinder” is the best sitcom on television, by far. This week’s episode was hilarious.
