Imagine winning $8.5 million on a slot machine, only to walk away with $80.

That’s what happened to Veronica Castillo, who hit the $8.5 million jackpot at a Lucky Eagle Casino slot machine in Rochester, Washington, last weekend, only to be told the machine malfunctioned, according to KOIN 6 News.

Castillo, a mortgage loan officer, thought she had struck it rich after putting $100 in the machine.

“I was very excited, happy,” she told KOIN 6 News. “Then I couldn’t believe it.”

Casino staff quickly informed Castillo the machine malfunctioned and took it away after giving her $80.

And she was not happy about it.

“To me, it’s cheating, may even be fraudulent,” Castillo said. “My first thought was, how many people has this happened to? They think they won, then going away empty-handed.”

Forget empty-handed, she was actually out $20, based on the original play of $100.

The casino issued a statement saying the machine manufacturer, Rocket Gaming Systems, “is in the process of conducting a forensic investigation to determine the cause of the display malfunction that occurred,” according to the Daily Mail.

“Rocket has not yet been able to determine how the error occurred although it is  absolutely clear that the gaming machine played by Ms. Castillo experienced a display malfunction: This machine offers a maximum jackpot of $20,000 if a maximum bet is placed on all lines,” the statement said.

According to the casino, the maximum jackpot that Castillo could have won “based on the number of lines and credits she was betting is $6,000.”

And while they’ve offered her an apology and a weekend stay at the property, to include dining and free play, Castillo is in the process of getting an attorney.

“What I expect at the very least, is to create awareness about how the casinos work, when the players get the big winnings!” she wrote on Facebook.
