Unflappable Dr. Ben Carson got testy with a hostile press—asking why the media didn’t care about President Obama’s past and firing back a warning: “The American people are waking up to your games.”
The normally collected and soft-spoken Republican frontrunner, who once led a 19-hour surgery, answered questions about his past in a press conference Friday, spurred on by (now proven false) accusations that he fabricated a story about being invited to West Point.
Under a hail of questions, Carson easily deflected what should have been a non-story that Army officers tried to recruit Carson, when he was a high school senior and JROTC leader, offering a “full scholarship” to the US Military Academy at West Point. The facts are clear: every cadet at West Point gets free tuition, room and board.
“If you look at one of the websites that West Point has today, it says ‘government offers full scholarship’ to West Point,” Carson explained. That should have been the end of it.
But the press kept digging, goading the logical and intelligent brain surgeon into making some stark observations about the fervency in which the media is trying to find a scandal.
“There is a desperation on behalf of some to try to tarnish me,” he said. “They are getting desperate.”
“Next week it will be my kindergarten teacher who said I peed in my pants,” Carson dryly commented.
When the media moved to challenge other stories in Carson’s memoir, he hit back, calling it “the most lame investigation I have ever seen,” and a “witch hunt.”
And then he silenced them with this: “I do not remember this level of scrutiny for one President Barack Obama when he was running.”
“Why are you guys not interested in why his records are sealed?” he pressed. But the media didn’t answer.
Around the 6-minute mark, things start getting dramatic:
Carson’s supporters echoed his sentiments on Twitter.
