After Tuesday’s election Hamtramck, Michigan, can put its name on the record books for being an American first – only not everyone will be happy about this kind of “first.”

The once mostly Polish town has seen a wave of change over the past few decades bringing in new immigrants from Middle East, Asia and Southeastern Europe, Click On Detroit reported.

That change was seen in Tuesday’s election when one more Muslim city councilman was voted in to public office, giving four out of six spots to Muslim-faith members according to Click on Detroit.

“We are very proud and we are very happy for that achievement, what we have done in this city, for our city,” said voter Jamal Alturki.

Hamtramck’s city council is said to be the first Muslim majority in the nation.

“I think that sends a message not only to Hamtramck but throughout the region that people want their representation in offices,” Councilman Anam Miah told Click on Detroit.

Hamtramack is located six miles outside of Detroit and has an estimated population of 22,423 according to the 2010 Census.

Newly elected Saad Almasmari assured everyone will be represented. “We are going to represent everybody. We are going to serve everybody, Christians, Jewish, Muslims, everybody,” said Almasmari.
