Several months ago, the energy giant Exxon Mobil Corp. declined to renew its sponsorship of the Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting. Now, Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton is calling for a federal investigation of Exxon Mobil’s climate change activities.
Coincidence?
Global warming activists have been accusing Exxon Mobil of misleading the public about climate change for some time but, until recently, Clinton appeared willing to go along, according to The Washington Free Beacon.
This year, the petroleum giant, which has in the past donated between $1 million and $5 million to the Clinton family foundation, was one of six corporations that decided to back out of sponsoring the Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting.
That decision followed an April report by Charity Navigator, a major charity watchdog group, which placed the Clinton Foundation on its “watch list” of problematic nonprofits due to its messy finances, according to The New York Post.
It reported that in 2013, the foundation spent a mere $9 million in direct aid against its $140 million in grants.
The Free Beacon reported:
Clinton said last week that the Department of Justice should investigate ExxonMobil for allegedly withholding data related to climate change, saying that there is “a lot of evidence they misled people.”
But despite Clinton’s comments, the Democratic presidential frontrunner has seemed willing to work with the oil giant until very recently, the International Business Times reports. And there is no indication that she’s planning to cut her financial ties with the company:
Folks on social media didn’t see anything coincidental about Exxon Mobil’s withdrawal of support and Clinton’s call for an investigation.
