Donald Trump has put some red meat behind his frequent calls to reform care for our country’s veterans, introducing his plan to reform the Veterans Administration Saturday at a rally in Norfolk, Va.
The plan, titled “Veterans Administration reforms that will make America great again,” promises to eliminate long drives, backlogs, and “excessive red tape.”
Trump said in the plan he will fire “the corrupt and incompetent VA executives who let our veterans down, by modernizing the VA,” and empowering doctors and nurses.
Under a Trump Administration, all veterans eligible for VA health care can bring their veteran’s ID card to any doctor or care facility that accepts Medicare to get the care they need immediately. Our veterans have earned the freedom to choose better or more convenient care from the doctor and facility of their choice. The power to choose will stop the wait time backlogs and force the VA to improve and compete if the department wants to keep receiving veterans’ healthcare dollars. The VA will become more responsive to veterans, develop more efficient systems, and improve the quality of care because it will have no other choice.
At the rally, Trump drummed on the power to choose as the linchpin of his VA plan, while he railed against President Obama’s repeated claim that if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. “It was a great big fat disgusting lie,” he said of Obamacare. “It was a fraud on the American people.”
Trump also highlighted the fact that his plan includes support for women veterans. “Because we’ve forgotten about the women,” he said. “We’re going to better support our women veterans.”
