Protests ignite outside governor’s mansion after MASSIVE sanctuary city law

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory signed a bill into law this week making it illegal for cities to become sanctuaries for illegal immigrants, by prohibiting them from restricting law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration officials.

WRAL reported:

House Bill 318, dubbed the Protect North Carolina Workers Act, also requires state and local government agencies to use the E-Verify system to check the legal status of job applicants and contractors, bars government agencies or law enforcement from using consular or embassy documents to verify someone’s identity or residence and limits food assistance for able-bodied, childless adults who are unemployed.

“Each individual arriving here in a legal manner, following our laws, in search of a better life is a blessing to our state and to our country. We want to continue that strength of our great country, but in doing so, we must follow the law and not tie the hands of the men and women behind me,” McCrory, a Republican, said at the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office. “We’re going to enforce the law and help our law enforcement officers protect our citizens.”

The North Carolina cities of Durham, Chapel Hill and Carrboro have declared sanctuary status for immigrants who have arrived here illegally, or have overstayed their visas.

Not everyone was thrilled with the announcement, however. Unions and immigrant rights groups lobbied long and hard to urge McCrory to veto the bill, and demonstrations were held outside the governor’s mansion in Raleigh.

The fact that unions didn’t support the bill surprised some, while others saw it as business as usual.

“We are North Carolina”? Others weren’t so sure.

A view from the air.

The issue of sanctuary jurisdictions burst into the national consciousness on July 1 when Kate Steinle, 32, died in her father’s arms after being shot by Francisco Sanchez, a felon and illegal immigrant who’d been deported to his native Mexico five times.

The shooting occurred on a tourist pier in San Francisco, a sanctuary city.
