Obama blows one more promise: Plans to ‘run out the clock’ with US boots on ground in Syria, Iraq

boots-on-groundThe United States has announced what it calls a “shift” in operations in Syria by deploying a small number of special operations forces, not to exceed 50, in northern Syria and Iraq.

A senior administration official confirmed that President Barack Obama has approved a limited number of boots on the ground in its effort to combat Islamic State militants.

“We have been focused on intensifying elements of our strategy that have been working, while also moving away from elements of our approach that have proven less effective,” the official explained, according to NBC News.

But it may be a situation of “too little, too late,” according to Rep. Mac Thornberry, chair of the House Armed Services Committee, who called it a reaction to a “failed policy” against the Islamic State.

“I’m concerned that the administration is trying to put in place limited measures — too late — that are not going to make a difference,” the Texas Republican told NBC News. “I don’t see a strategy towards accomplishing a goal, I see an effort to run out the clock without disaster.”

More than that, the expected announcement represents one more presidential promise that’s gone unfulfilled.

In case you’ve forgotten, here’s a little trip down memory lane.

Still, there’s one bright spot.
