Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton‘s long awaited appearance before the House Select Committee on Benghazi finally arrived Thursday, and one of the more hard-hitting lines of questioning came from Rep. Lynn Westmoreland regarding why requests for more security were ignored.
The Republican from Georgia noted that Stevens had sent about twenty requests for additional security, and asked why he didn’t contact Clinton directly since the two were friends.
“I do not believe that he had my personal email,” Clinton replied. “He had the email and the direct line to everybody that he worked with for years.”
“If I were a friend of yours, I would have found a way to reach you,” Westmoreland said.
Clinton did acknowledge that there were requests for more security.
“Yes, he and the people working for him asked for more security, some of those requests were approved, others were not,” she said nonchalantly. “We’re obviously looking to learn what more we could do.”
Clinton then all but placed the blame for his ultimate demise on Ambassador Stevens himself.
“He never said to anyone in the State Department, ‘You know what, we just can’t keep doing this, we can’t stay there,’” she said.
