A principal at a Bronx elementary school ordered all the teachers’ desks to be tossed to the curb, prompting a public backlash.
Donna Connelly, principal of PS 24, the Spuyten Duyvil School in Riverdale, ordered the teachers’ filing cabinets be trashed along with the desks — after giving them time to empty them out, according to The New York Post.
The teachers were told to drag the desks and cabinets out to the hallway, and then the custodial staff would take take them to the curb.
“It’s the 21st century,” Connelly said, according to Post sources. “You don’t need desks.”
So, we don’t have desks in the 231st century?
The “no desk” rule, which reportedly demoralized teachers, wasn’t prompted by poor performance – students at the K-5 school perform well above the city average on standardized tests.
Even though no chairs were tossed, a source said that Connelly told teachers that she does not want them sitting.
When asked where to store their supplies, she reportedly said, “Figure it out.” They were also told to “use the lunchroom” to grade papers.
The Post reported:
Teachers had to remove student paperwork and items such as devices to help kids with asthma.
“All their stuff is in boxes, bags and on the radiators,” a source said.
Children watched as the furniture was cleared out, one said. “The kids saw their teachers upset about what was going on. It was dehumanizing.”
The Post also reported that one of the teachers posted photos of the discarded furniture on his Facebook page, prompting lots of comments. That page has since become unavailable.
However, the story stirred up interest on Twitter. Here are a few examples.

Connelly’s action apparently didn’t have the blessings of her higher-ups, and on Friday, District 10 Superintendent Melodie Mashel ordered the furniture returned to the school, the Post reported.
Connelly still had the last word. Instead of returning it to the classrooms, it’s being stored in the school basement.
