An Hispanic advocacy group and an on-line petition is calling for NBC to retract its invitation to Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump to host an upcoming edition of “Saturday Night Live.”
The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda said in its letter to NBC Universal CEO Stephen Burke and “SNL” executive producer Lorne Michaels that it applauded the network’s decision to sever its Miss USA and Miss Universe ties to Trump.
But it’s now time to go the extra mile, according to The Associated Press.
“We are appalled that you would enable Trump’s hateful speech for nothing (more) than a ratings ploy and ask that you rescind the SNL invitation,” the group said in its publicly-released letter sent Thursday.
The AP reported:
Trump’s appearance on “Saturday Night Live” will end up “sanitizing” his remarks with humor, said Felix Sanchez, who is chairman and co-founder of the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts and among those who signed the letter.
NBC Universal is being contradictory, Sanchez said, courting Hispanic viewers with its Spanish-language platforms but giving them a “slap in the face” by putting Trump on the air.
The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda, which includes 40 national and regional civil rights and public policy groups, is reviewing further action, Sanchez said, including such options as staging protests the night of the telecast or calling for boycotts of the show or network.
Sanchez recalled a time in 1990 when “SNL” cast member Nora Dunn and pop singer Sinead O’Connor refused to appear on the night comedian Andrew Dice Clay hosted the show, and suggested that cast members boycott Trump’s appearance, scheduled for November 7.
In addition, the left-wing group MoveOn.org initiated an on-line petition calling for Trump’s removal from the show. It states:
Mass deportation is not funny! By allowing Donald Trump to host Saturday Night Live, NBC is excusing and even validating Trump’s hateful comments about immigrants and Latinos. Tell NBC to dump Donald Trump as host of Saturday Night Live!
The petition currently has over 100,000 signatures.
