Confederate flag supporters indicted under Georgia terroristic threats law

Georgia Confederate battle flag supporters from a group named Respect the Flag have been indicted on terrorism charges.

The charges, announced Monday, stem from a July 25 incident in which the group of 15 drove vehicles adorned with the flag through a neighborhood in Douglasville, getting into an altercation with people outside of a children’s birthday party, Fox 5 reported.

After media coverage of the confrontation, which was captured in part on video, the Douglasville Police Department and the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office conducted an investigation into the circumstances.

On Friday, the Grand Jury indicted 15 members of “Respect the Flag” on charges they violated Georgia’s Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act and terroristic threats.

“Georgia’s street gang, terrorism and prevention act is worded very broadly to deal with any type of activity that occurs with a group that’s organized that commits a crime,” Fortner explained.

The indictment also charged two members of the group with battery for an incident that occurred that same day at a gas station in the area of Douglas County known as the Corn Crib.

The group and residents gave varying accounts of what happened.

“One had a gun, saying he was gonna kill the n******,” Melissa Alford, whose home played host to the party, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “Then one of them said, ‘Gimme the gun, I’ll shoot them n******.”

“I don’t have a problem if that’s their culture,” Alford told the Journal-Constitution. “If they want to make a statement that these flags mean something to them, I’m OK with that. But you’ve got to do it right. You can’t go around just blatantly terrorizing people.”

The group told the police, and the media, another story entirely.

Levi Bush, who led the group, contended that the fight started when the people at the party started throwing rocks at them, but admitted that a member of his group likely did use the racial slur.

“Basically about eight of us had to hold 15 to 20 of them back,” Bush told the Journal-Constitution.
