The head of a national Tea Party group issued a scathing statement Monday, urging lawmakers to prevent House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Rep. Paul Ryan from being tapped as the next House speaker.
“For too long, Speaker Boehner has run the House as a top down oligarchy that ignores the wishes of rank-and-file, duly elected Members of Congress, effectively diminishing the true representation of the American people and the integrity of the institution that he so often purports to protect,” said Jenny Beth Martin, the co-founder and national coordinator of Tea Party Patriots, which helped derail House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s bid this month.
Ryan is considered one of the few lawmakers who could win enough support from both the moderate and conservative wings of the GOP to replace outgoing House Speaker John A. Boehner of Ohio.
But his past votes for the 2009 bank bailout and the 2001 No Child Left Behind education law, as well his support for an immigration overhaul, have earned Ryan the suspicion of some in the conservative grassroots.
Martin called Ryan’s record “anything but conservative” and outlined the Wisconsin Republican’s legislative record.
“Congressman Paul Ryan is now being looked to by many moderate Republicans, D.C. talking heads, and even Speaker John Boehner himself as the right man to try to bring the Republican conference together,” Martin said in a statement. “Unfortunately, Ryan’s record is anything but conservative — and he is not the best candidate to be Speaker.”
“Specifically, his support for No Child Left Behind, the largest expansion of the federal government since Lyndon Johnson’s ‘Great Society’ – that is, Medicare Part D, the Prescription Drug bill – the bailouts, the debt ceiling, and his support of the Gang of 8 amnesty bill demonstrate that Ryan is no different than John Boehner and Kevin McCarthy, whom grassroots conservatives and the GOP conference have already rejected,” Martin said.
Martin’s comments came after Rep. Jim Jordan, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, said according to CNS News Sunday, that his group has endorsed Rep. Daniel Webster of Florida, but it would also “look favorably” on Ryan.
