Did President Obama rush to Hillary Clinton’s defense about her use of a private email server while she was secretary of state? Not quite–he called it “a mistake that she’s acknowledged.”
In a “60 Minutes” interview with CBS’ Steve Kroft that aired Sunday, Obama said he thought Clinton’s email scandal was “legitimate,” and twice said that she made “a mistake.”
I think that it was a mistake that she has acknowledged and– you know, as a general proposition, when we’re in these offices, we have to be more sensitive and stay as far away from the line as possible when it comes to how we handle information, how we handle our own personal data. And, you know, she made a mistake. She has acknowledged it.
The president also didn’t offer Clinton much cover on claims that Congress’ investigation was politically motivated, although he said that politics drove it “in part.”
While Obama said he didn’t believe national security was endangered, he certainly didn’t dismiss the scandal.
Setting up the embattled Democratic front-runner for more tough questions, the president said he thinks “that it is important for her to answer these questions to the satisfaction of the American public.”
The most damning comment came when Kroft gave the president an opportunity to address what many Americans have been thinking: “This administration has prosecuted people for having classified material on their private computers.”
Obama hung Clinton out to dry.
“Well, I– there’s no doubt that there had been breaches, and these are all a matter of degree. We don’t get an impression that here there was purposely efforts– on– in– to hide something or to squirrel away information,” he replied, concluding, “I’m going to leave it to Hillary when she has an interview with you to address all these questions.”
And who’s waiting in the wings?
Journalist and author Edward Klein told “Fox and Friends” Saturday that he thinks Vice President Joe Biden has been given the green light to run by Obama.
“The White House has been saying ‘Go, Joe, Go!'” Klein said.
