Mike Rowe, best known as the host of the Discovery Channel’s former series “Dirty Jobs,” would like to place a billboard saying to work harder and smarter in the middle of New York City.
“If somebody gave me a billboard I’d probably put it right here,” Rowe, who currently hosts CNN’s “Somebody’s Gotta Do It” told TheBlaze, at CNN’s New York newsroom. “[I]‘d take that old platitude, ‘work smart, not hard’ and I’d cross out the ‘not,’ and write ‘and’ instead.”
“[I]‘d suggest that working smart without working hard is a waste of time and working hard without working smart is just another word for drudgery.”
Rowe was responding to the question, “If you could put a message on a billboard, anywhere in the world, where would you put it and what would it say?” The question is regularly asked by Timothy Ferriss, author of “The 4-Hour Workweek,” in his podcasts.
“I met Tim at one of those TED conferences,” said Rowe. “[I] was a little embarrassed because — I used the success of that book as an example of what was wrong socially in the sense that we have kind of declared war on work, in the sense that we have made work the reason we are not happy.”
“I used to point to the ‘The 4-Hour Workweek’ and say reasonably, you know, who works four hours in a week?”
