Daniel Hannan, a Conservative Member of the European Parliament, said that the Republican party has “a great crop” of presidential candidates — but front-runner Donald Trump isn’t one of them.
“In general, I’m very impressed,” Hannan said, on Fox News Channel’s “Your World” with host Neil Cavuto on Wednesday. “I think there’s a great crop of Republican candidates.”
When Cavuto brought up Trump and Democratic presidential candidate, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Hannan said, “Please don’t do this to me.”
He began by praising America’s primary system, saying that “it tends to identify the really obvious cranks.”
On the prospect of the primaries selecting a Sanders or a Trump, Hannan said, “that would slightly terrify me.”
Remarking on Trump likening himself to Reagan, Hannan observed that Reagan demonstrated being anti-establishment without being “crass and foul-mouthed.”
Cavuto brought up other presidents who could be “outside the box” and profane, mentioning Andrew Jackson as an example. “I know that we deserve better than that,” Hannan replied, ” and that we expect better than that.”
He brought up Rand Paul and Ted Cruz as candidates that Europeans are expressing interest in.
“That’s how you can be an outsider without being a complete lunatic,” he said.
