Insiders say Atwater would fare well in Senate race – Florida’s Republican U.S. Senate primary to replace Marco Rubio has been a humdrum affair featuring three credible but little-known candidates overshadowed by the presidential campaign. But now Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater is reconsidering his decision not to run, and in the latest Tampa Bay Times Florida Insider Poll of nearly 160 Florida politicos, more than two thirds predict Atwater will win the nomination. Flags at half-staff in Florida for Oregon shooting victims – Florida Governor Rick Scott declared that the state and national flags in Florida will be flown at half-staff until Tuesday. Governor Scott issued the memorandum Sunday afternoon. Read more
Miami congressman agrees to pay another fine over misreported campaign contributions – U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo will pay a second fine to the Federal Election Commission, this time over $52,875 in campaign contributions he failed to properly report last year. The Miami Republican settled with the FEC and agreed to pay $1,050. He reached a similar agreement earlier this year, with a fine of $3,200, for omitting $26,700 in contributions. Read more
State GOP chief in boastful spirits – With Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio and Donald Trump now committed to attending a Republican Party of Florida event in November showcasing the GOP presidential candidates, RPOF Chairman Blaise Ingoglia was in a boastful mood last week during a swing through Sarasota. “I will tell you that this is shaping up to be one of the biggest events in Republican Party history,” Ingoglia told a crowd of 150 gathered for the Republican Women’s Club of Sarasota 65th anniversary celebration at Michael’s On East. Enterprise Florida names new chief marketing officer – Enterprise Florida has tapped a 30-year veteran of marketing and public affairs to be its new chief marketing officer. Joseph Hice Jr. takes the marketing job as Enterprise Florida faces criticism in the Florida Legislature for the financing structure of its economic development incentive program. Hice has recently been a partner at Tampa-based Well Strategics, a public relations firm specializing in healthcare clients. Read more
