The American Civil Liberties Union is demanding that Catholic hospitals provide abortions.
Last week, the ACLU filed a lawsuit against Trinity Health Corporation for the group’s refusal to provide emergency abortions.
Trinity is one of the country’s largest Catholic health care groups.
The ACLU is suing the health care provider for its “repeated and systematic failure to provide women suffering pregnancy complications with appropriate emergency abortions as required by federal law,” an ACLU press release said.
“We’re taking a stand today to fight for pregnant women who are denied potentially life-saving care because doctors are forced to follow religious directives rather than best medical practices,” ACLU attorney, Brooke Tucker, said in the press release. “That the Catholic Church considers abortion and sterilization intrinsically evil must not be allowed to grant them an exemption from abiding by rules laid down by the Affordable Care Act.”
Father John Morris, Fox News religion correspondent, saw things differently. Appearing on “Fox & Friends Weekend,” Morris said that the lawsuit is one more effort to force religious institutions to act against their deeply-held beliefs.
“The ACLU wants no religious belief whatsoever to get in the way of their objectives, their goals, their ideology,” the Catholic priest said. “Would the ACLU be happy if every Catholic hospital had to do full-term abortions? You better believe it. No doubt.”
Although the ACLU claims to be looking out for the patient, Morris said the group doesn’t believe that the baby inside the womb is also a patient.
Morris wasn’t the only person disgusted.
