Fellow Republicans — conservative Republicans — rushed to defend former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush when liberals took his “stuff happens” remark way out of context with respect to Thursday’s shooting at Oregon’s Umpqua Community College.
“We’re in a difficult time in our country and I don’t think more government is necessarily the answer to this,” Bush, who’s an establishment Republican presidential candidate, said in Greenville, South Carolina. “I think we need to reconnect ourselves with everybody else. It’s very sad to see. I resist the notion. I had this challenge as governor, ’cause we had, look, stuff happens, there’s always a crisis. And the impulse is always to do something and it’s not necessarily the right thing to do.”
New Yorker writer and CNN contributor, Ryan Lizza, seemed to hear only two words in Bush’s statement. He predictably started a firestorm by tweeting:
In Greenville, South Carolina, Jeb Bush, arguing against calls for gun control after major tragedy, says, “stuff happens.”

Lizza’s followers were understandably appalled:

@sullivanamy @RyanLizza Is that the obit for his campaign?

@AbPow You just won, man. Amazing tweet. — Adam Hirshfield (@ahirshfield) October 2, 2015
Washington Examiner media reporter T. Becket Adams saw right through this ruse, however, and tweeted:
.@RyanLizza Can you provide full context of quote? Video or transcript maybe?
— T. Becket Adams (@BecketAdams) October 2, 2015
Adams continued to hammer, and others agreed there was more to the story than “stuff happens.”
Huge difference between shrugging and saying “stuff happens.” And saying “…stuff happens and let me explain why…” Is there more to this? — T. Becket Adams (@BecketAdams) October 2, 2015
@BecketAdams I’m sure the full speech will come out on a conservative blog that no one reads. “Stuff happens” will make Buzzfeed & NYTs

@BecketAdams @RyanLizza yes would like to see full context of this there is reason why reporters reputations are dog shit — Joseph Snable (@Josephriskgmt) October 2, 2015
@BecketAdams @RyanLizza Entire exchange is over 3 mins long,..Bush’s answer is more nuanced by a measure of 1000

The Washington Free Beacon’s Lachlan Markey provideds the contect — by posting Bush’s full remarks:
Yeah, Jeb’s “stuff happens” remark was taken completely out of context https://t.co/W6SwtSIKjv — Lachlan Markay (@lachlan) October 2, 2015

Bush may not be the favorite candidate of conservatives, but they can smell a hatchet job a mile away and won’t stand for it.
